Being Authentic Is The New Black

Here’s the #1 mistake with your story… it’s not yours.

Authenticity is something that’s much easier said than done. The intentions of others are always in question. Am I the only one who questions myself daily? The history of us as a nation, within families, and past relationships has awakened an era of individuals with trust issues.

“oh-ooh, trust issues” (Drake’s voice)

With that being said, to build real-life connections, we have to be authentic. And whether you want a million friends, or just one.. you have to connect to your actual story of how you became who you are today.

Unearthing The Real You

To tell your story, you must first know your story.

Or as Drake would also put it, know yourself. Getting to know yourself isn’t a one and done process. It’s every day, every moment, every once-in-a-blue-moon kind of thing. You never really know enough about you, but you begin to connect more with certain parts of you.

If you’re reading this .. you probably aren’t a 13-year-old who hasn’t been here long enough to know half the things you’ll need to know in life. You’re most likely someone who has been here for at least 2 decades and maybe a life crisis or two. Which in that case, you have already been through your fair share of crap and problems. You also probably have a bunch of ways in which you move forward, shut down, or handle day-to-day situations.

A lot of the ways that we naturally process emotions and move through life include habits that we’ve picked up to do so. Some habits block us from being authentic to our true selves. Not to blame yourself, we all did what we had to do to make it here today. Now that we have arrived, it’s time to let the over-guarding and hiding from your true self go. Doing some serious shadow-work can help with this.

Authentically You in 2021

The more you uncover your authentic self, the more fun telling your story will be. The path that led you to this very point is so important, and maybe everyone in the world doesn’t need to know it, but someone does. When you show up as your authentic self, you allow others to do the same.

You ever notice how in each class there’s the one person who asks the first seemingly rhetoric question, and then a bunch of hands also go up with their follow-ups? That one person encouraged everyone else to get the answers they needed by trusting in their inquisitions.

So, whether you’re a billion-dollar brand or a 20-something-year-old, the main thing is that you recognize your own individual story and you build from that. Story-telling is the #1-way humans learn things, our brains sync up when we tell stories. Be inspired to rewrite and edit anything you want, just don’t forget to share the “why”.
